Nuvia Mendoza
Nuvia is currently the Campus-Based Coordinator of College Success at DSST Montview High School. As such, she helps students access as many college opportunities as possible. This includes helping seniors with the college application process and securing financial aid.
With the school’s philosophy of preparing students for college and beyond, Nuvia ensures that her students are informed of postsecondary pathways that meet their individual needs. She also manages and plans college seminar lessons for 9th and 10th-grade students and serves as one of the school’s 10th-grade advisors.
Nuvia received her undergraduate degree from the University of Colorado Boulder, with a double major in Political Science and Spanish with an emphasis on interpretation and translation. Nuvia, is proud to be the first in her family to complete a college degree. Despite having to master English as a second language during her K-12 experience, Nuvia graduated from CU Boulder with a 3.37 GPA. In fact, her GPA increased every semester throughout her undergraduate years!
While at CU Boulder, Nuvia was involved in extracurricular activities and programs, including the Pi Lambda Chi Latina Sorority, Inc., where she served as Treasurer, Community Service Chair, and Recruitment Chair. She also served as President of the Multicultural Greek Council and was their university spokesperson, overseeing eight fraternities and sororities. This role provided her with experience in student affairs and event management.
Additionally, Nuvia was a student employee with the McNeill Academic Program, where she worked as an Instructor’s Assistant and Front Office Assistant. This provided her with experiences in undergraduate academic and student affairs. In her junior year, she was a Fellow with the Colorado Latino Leadership, Advocacy and Research Organization Fellowship Program, where she interned with Representative Monica Duran, giving her the opportunity to work in state government and policy.
Her experiences in education have given Nuvia a passion for educational equity. Nuvia intends to continue pursuing this passion at a university and/or a nonprofit focused on college access and success. She also intends to earn a master’s degree in Higher Education, Education Policy, Student Affairs, or a similar subject to continue expanding knowledge and skills as an educational opportunity professional.
